Generally candid shots are much more informal and have a ‘behind the scenes’ vibe. The photographer will need experience to be able to quietly mingle within the crowd and spontaneously capture shots that stand out.

One of the more popular styles in recent years is the documentary or photojournalistic type of wedding photography. Unlike other styles, the documentary approach aims to capture genuine moments and knit them into a story.
The skill required to pull off this style is definitely quite high. Not only will the photographer have to be able to quickly frame and capture key moments, but they must be experienced enough to anticipate reactions and capture them.

Contemporary wedding photography
The main difference between contemporary wedding photography and other styles is that it is designed to look more like a magazine editorial shoot. Typically it consists of posed shots against dramatic backdrops that have interesting lighting and features.
Nowadays contemporary wedding photography is the most popular style for pre-wedding photoshoots. And while it is possible to use this style of the big day itself, it may not be as genuine a reflection of the mood and emotion.

Fine art photography
On the surface, fine art photography may be somewhat similar to contemporary wedding photography. It often uses various traditional poses, but could incorporate candid shots too. At the same time the photographer will curate the light, backdrop, and other aesthetics.
The main focus of fine art photography is to creatively put a focus on the smaller details and bring them into the spotlight. Just like any type of art, its execution can vary quite a bit from one photographer to the next – so you need to find one with a style that you like.
Keep in mind that aside from the style there are lots of other things to look at when choosing a wedding photographer. However if you do nail down the style that you prefer, it will make it easier for you to find a match – and communicate what you expect.
