People thronged the shopping malls and markets amid a strict lockdown in force to buy new dresses and other necessary items on Thursday, a day before the Eid-ul-Fitr, the largest religious festival the Muslims celebrate with their near and dear ones.
Crowds were seen everywhere – from malls to footpaths and even in the kitchen markets, but many people were roaming around fearlessly, reluctant to wear masks and maintain social distancing, reports Bangla Tribune.
The shops are open for people from 10 am to 8pm, as per a government order issued on May 3, when the authorities warned the owners of shops and malls of action if they did not maintain health guidelines.
The sellers are, however, happy due to the pressure of customers and a sharp rise in sales. But many of them did not follow the rules to check the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
In New Market and Gausia areas, thousands of people from all occupations were busy choosing products and bargaining at the shops and footpaths without maintaining social distance.

At Muktijoddha Super Market in Mirpur-1, the market authorities have not taken any effective steps to make the flood of people follow the guidelines. There is no arrangement of washing hands or spraying disinfectants. Most of the staff of the market did not have masks when the correspondent met them.
Shoppers also jammed in Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, Jamuna Future Park, Metro Shopping Mall, Shimanto Square, Tokyo Square, Shyamoli Square, Police Plaza Concord Shopping, outlets in Gulshan and Banani, Confidence Shopping Mall, Rajlaxmi Complex and other shopping points across the capital for the last minute purchases.
The government has decided to extend the ongoing lockdown by another seven days from May 17, being concerned about a possible third wave after the Eid due to the detection of the highly contagious Indian variant of the virus in Bangladesh.
According to latest figures, Bangladesh registered 31 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours till Thursday morning, taking the total number of deaths in the country to 12,076.
